Windows XP Solution List
- Click on Start, click Run, in the Open field type in devmgmt.msc , and click OK. Within the Device Manager, scroll down the list of devices to find Network Adapters. Click on the (+) sign to the left of Network Adapters. Under Network Adapters, you should have at least two entries – a Dialup Adapter and the NIC. (Note: If you do not see a NIC, this means the device is not installed. You must install it first using the driver CD/disk supplied by the manufacturer.) Check the icon of your NIC to see if has any marks on it.
There are two marks that you will commonly see: (1) a red X means the device is disabled; (2) a yellow dot with a black exclamation mark means the device driver is improperly installed. If your NIC is improperly installed, uninstall it first (highlight the NIC, right-click on the icon then select uninstall) then reinstall it again using the driver CD/disk from the manufacturer. If the NIC is disabled, you need to enable it by highlighting the NIC, right-clicking, and selecting Enable. Restart your computer.
